FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is included in my assessment?
This includes a full questionnaire and physical examination and assessment of the severity of the problem together with subsequent discussion of that problem with our expert team.

Do I always need an MR scan?
MR scan is only required in a proportion of patients with spinal problems. This is an investigation which uses the effect of magnetism on body structures and can pick out problems such as slipped discs, worn discs and more serious spinal conditions such as tumours. We tend to use MR scanning where the problem is complex, where nerve compression is involved and where we suspect serious spinal pathology. The majority of patients can be treated without the need for an MR scan.

Can my Specialist or Expert make a diagnosis without an MRI scan?
Yes, in most cases a diagnosis can be made on the basis of the history, that is the questions that are asked and the physical examination.

If I am in severe pain can I be treated immediately?
Yes, if the pain is so severe that ordinary physical therapy is inappropriate other methods of treatment such as injections or even surgery can be rapidly arranged.

Do I need to see my GP before referral?
Most patients will have consulted their doctor in the early stages of back pain. It is not essential to see the GP but our health expert will inform your General Practitioner after results of our assessment and any treatment that is advised.
